When Elizabeth Olsen first signed on to play Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the comic book hero’s history with the X-Men wasn’t something the actor was concerned about. While Marvel Studios was able to use the character in movies due to his affiliation with The Avengers, 20th Century Fox owned the rights to anything mutant-related, so the MCU had to keep their hands off that material (and, to in turn, find a new origin for his powers).
Seven years later Avengers: Age of UltronHowever, that’s no longer the case, as the Disney-Fox merger means the X-Men will soon become a huge part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon. We don’t know exactly when that will happen, but Elizabeth Olsen is certainly excited about it, given that she doesn’t quite know what the future holds for Scarlet Witch after Doctor strange in the multiverse of madness.
I interviewed Elizabeth Olsen this morning about her work on the latest Marvel Studios movie, and towards the end of our conversation I asked her about her future in the franchise. recognizing that doctor strange is a movie that explores the magical side of the character, I asked her if she was excited about the X-Men coming to take Wanda in whole new directions, and she was definitely on board. Olson said,
Last week, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced at CinemaCon that the franchise is currently planning for the next 10 years of Marvel projects, and it’s impossible to imagine that the introduction of the X-Men isn’t a key part of the plan. . . At this point, we have no idea what strategy will be employed to introduce beloved heroes and villains like Professor X, Magneto, Wolverine, Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Rogue, but Elizabeth Olsen is clearly excited to be a part of whatever it is. is happening. .
Arguably the most exciting part of Scarlet Witch being a part of the X-Men introduction is the fact that the Marvel Cinematic Universe may seize the opportunity to adapt key details of Wanda’s family history, namely the fact that in the comics Magneto is her. father. fox X Men The movies lightly explored this lineage on the big screen with iterations of the Master of Magnetism and Peter Maximoff aka Quicksilver played respectively by Michael Fassbender and Evan Peters, but the MCU can now run a more substantial version of that complicated relationship. comics on the big screen.
Hopefully we’ll soon find out what’s next for Scarlet Witch (let’s not forget San Diego Comic-Con is only a couple of months away), but for now fans can enjoy all of Wanda Maximoff’s awesomeness at Doctor strange in the multiverse of madness, which hits theaters this weekend.
