His artworks, which include watercolor, oil and acrylic, mixed media and other forms, will go on sale online on Friday, November 26. Artists lowered their prices and added greeting cards and photographs to make the art accessible. All proceeds from the sale will go to the Christmas Fund.

The group, which meets weekly to paint together, moved online during the confinement, but developed activities to keep each other motivated.

“We started Challenges,” said Dubravka Kapa. “It is a monthly event where a selected theme would inspire members to paint and share their works.” Some of the challenges were inspired by COVID, such as “looking back” and “looking forward.” Others were fickle, like “what’s in your fridge?”

Guest artists gave Zoom workshops and members were able to work on the theme for a week, then submit their pieces to the instructor for criticism.

Although the studio space reopened in September, Kapa said fewer members will be attending so far than usual. Its annual opening and exhibition, which is usually held in a gallery, moved online.

“At the last minute, the gallery canceled, so we had to rearrange and move the entire exhibition online,” Kapa said. “The works are normally judged by a Montreal artist, so this time the judge had to evaluate the works online.”

The online format has been extended to their fundraising initiative. Sale to benefit the Montreal Gazette Christmas Fund opens online Friday at the Women’s Art Studio website.

The Christmas Fund is committed to providing 6,500 checks to those in need this year. The Montreal Gazette absorbs all administration costs, so every penny goes to the recipients. Donations must be made online, through a secure website: christmasfund.com.
