Revolution in DTT: Secuoya also negotiates the sale of its license for 25 million

Curves are coming in DTT. This Monday Invertia published that Editorial Unit It has been negotiating for weeks the sale of its two free-to-air television signals for 50 million euros and now we can confirm that the group Secuoya, property of Raúl Berdonés, also has its frequency for sale, achieved in September 2015.

The sources consulted by this newspaper indicate that the starting price of the television signal –that currently broadcasts the channel Ten– is 25 million euros. Like Unidad Editorial, the group negotiates at forced marches because these licenses expire in 2025 and should request a government authorization to close this operation.

The market is moving, since there are at least two televisions that are looking for frequency. The first is The seventh, promoted by Marcos de Quinto, Félix Revuelta and Juan Francisco Zambudio. This chain will have studies in Madrid and MurciaIt has a national vocation and will have an initial investment of 100 million euros, but it still does not have a national DTT signal.

The same thing happens with the project of Martial cuquerella, which intends to launch an informative and conservative television of a national character, but still without the necessary license to broadcast throughout the Spanish territory.

Let us remember that a DTT frequency has a fixed cost of six million euros, equivalent to the payment that each channel must make to Cellnex, manager of the radioelectric space. A cost that should be added to the payment for these frequencies that are now for sale.

Awarded in 2015

Ten got its frequency in 2015, in the last DTT award, along with Kiss Group (issued by DKiss), Pass (the television of the Episcopal Conference), Atresmedia, Mediaset and Real Madrid TV.

However, things did not go well. The narrowness of the advertising market, losses of more than six million euros and the need for the group to focus its investments in audiovisual production on third parties, forced them to look for new formulas to make their channel profitable.

Along these lines, in October 2018 Mediapro and Secuoya They closed an agreement for the producer of Jaume Roures to take over the Ten chain’s grill. Through this pact the Catalan producer tried to re-float –with its wide catalog of sports programs and rights– a television that has not managed to raise its head since its birth, in April 2016.

In this way, Ten remained a bet on fiction and docurrealities, becoming a showcase for the group’s production companies, such as Globomedia.

The problem is that three years later and with the Covid in between, Mediapro significantly reduced its billing and in the midst of a renegotiation of its debt with the banks and the request for funds from the SEPI Ten is no longer a priority.

Minister council

In this sense, the sale of the signal is the best solution given the possibility that the signals lose market value as the end of the concessions approaches in 2025 and the uncertainty regarding a possible renewal grows.

In any case, we are talking about a public concession, so a sale of the channel is only the responsibility of the president of Government, Pedro Sánchez, and would require a special authorization from the Minister council.
