Querétaro, with the highest unemployment rate in the country

Querétaro, Qro. During October, Querétaro registered an unemployment rate of 7.06% of the economically active population (EAP), the highest in the country in that month, according to the National Survey of Occupation and Employment of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) .

The unemployment rate for October is the highest in the state in the last year, since the highest previous record was exactly one year ago, in October 2020 when it was around 7.65% of the EAP.

In October, Mexico City ranked as the second highest rate, with 6.03%, in addition to Quintana Roo with 5.71%, Estado de México with 5.45% and Tlaxcala with 5.32 percent.

Next – among the 12 entities with unemployment above the national – are Tabasco (5.04%), Coahuila (4.73%), Aguascalientes (4.72%), Nuevo León (4.26%), Tamaulipas (4.09%), Puebla (4.08 %) and San Luis Potosí (4.00 percent).

For Sonora and Hidalgo, the unemployment rate was 3.92% and 3.89% of the EAP, respectively, a level similar to the national average.

The 18 entities, with a rate below the national, ranged from 1.17 to 3.64% unemployment: Durango, 3.64%; Guanajuato, 3.48%; Baja California Sur, 3.41%; Campeche, 3.38%; Sinaloa, 3.36%; Jalisco, 3.36%; Michoacán, 3.27%; Veracruz, 3.25%; Colima, 3.21%; Zacatecas, 3.12%; Chihuahua, 3.10%; Chiapas, 2.80%; Nayarit, 2.74%; Baja California, 2.05%; Morelos, 1.98%; Guerrero, 1.46%; Yucatán, 1.42% and the lowest rate in Oaxaca of 1.17 percent.

The biggest monthly increase

In October, Querétaro also ranks as the entity with the highest percentage increase in the unemployment rate compared to the previous month, as it had an increase of 3.12 percentage points, climbing from 3.91% in September to 7.06% in October.

After Querétaro, Hidalgo had the most significant monthly increase, of 1.95 points, (going from 1.94 to 3.89% of the EAP).

In the tenth month of the year, 16 states had upward variations in the unemployment rate compared to the immediately previous month. The remaining 16 registered negative variations; the most important reductions were in Guanajuato, Tabasco and Baja California Sur.

However, the annual comparison shows that in October only six entities increased their unemployment rate: Hidalgo, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Tlaxcala and Michoacán. The rest descended.

As of October, the state recorded 634,086 formal jobs registered with the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), with this figure exceeding by 22,308 the total number of jobs it had in March 2020, when they added 611,778 and when the first began effects of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the Secretariat for Sustainable Development (Sedesu) estimates that the entity will close the year with about 34,000 jobs created throughout 2021, considering the effects of losses in December.
