The Vancouver Sun and The Province newsroom won two of British Columbia’s top journalism awards on Wednesday.

Columnist Dan Fumano won the 2021 Jack Webster Award for Excellence in Legal Journalism for his work on the debate on systemic racism that divided Vancouver police and the city council, while reporter Lori Culbert received excellence in health reporting. for its opioid overdose coverage. , which had worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Jack Webster Awards recognize the best work of BC journalism in print, online, broadcast and radio.

In total, 16 awards were presented at the awards ceremony, which was hosted by Global BC presenters Chris Gailus and Sophie Lui. For the second year in a row, the event was held online due to the pandemic.

Pioneering radio journalist Shushma Datt was honored with the Bruce Hutchison Lifetime Achievement Award and online news magazine The Tyee received this year’s Bill Good Award.

Two new awards were also presented at the ceremony.

The first is the Shelley Fralic Award, named after the Vancouver Sun columnist who died earlier this year. The award will be presented to a British Columbia journalist who exemplifies Fralic’s legacy and commitment to making her community a better place. A call for nominations will be announced in the spring.

The second prize, presented by BC Lt.-Gov. Janet Austin, is the Lieutenant Governor’s BC Journalism Fellowship. It will provide funding each year for three years to journalists to produce and publish in-depth stories that better inform the people of British Columbia. Applications for the scholarship will be accepted in January.
