90% of violations against girls in Mexico occur at home: Conavim

The National Commission to Prevent and Eradicate Violence against Women (Conavim) revealed that nine out of ten rapes of girls occur in the home, which are not reported due to mistrust of authority, fear or punishment.

Presenting the progress of the inter-institutional group for the comprehensive protection of women and girls in the country, from the National Palace, Fabiola Alanís Sámano, head of the Conavim acknowledged that “the cases that have most moved and outraged us are child femicides,” since some of the victims of this crime were minors between one and two years of age.

The Conavim It also reported that it has a monitoring system that, in coordination with the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection and the state prosecutors’ offices, identifies cases of violence against women and girls, and so far this year, the Conavim It has assisted 594 victims and survivors of violence, more than half due to sexual and physical violence; 34 cases of femicide and 7 of attempted femicide.

The agency announced that among the cases it has dealt with there were two child femicidesSome of the victims as young as 1 and 2 years old, both cases for sexual assault, one at the hands of the biological father, and the other at the hands of an uncle.

“Every day on average 580 women go to receive psychological attention and legal and medical advice, to file a complaint, to train for employment, and so on,” he added.

He mentioned that during the current administration, 121 million pesos have been invested for the attention of Gender Violence Alerts in the federal entities and gender alerts have been issued in Baja California, Guerrero, Chihuahua, the State of Mexico, Sonora, Puebla and Tlaxcala, and the alert is present in 25% of the country’s municipalities.

In addition, he reported that there are 56 justice centers for women, which will rise to 63 by the end of the year, where 174,000 women have been treated.

For her part, Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez, secretary of Citizen Security and Protection, highlighted that during September 2021 there was a decrease of 63% in the crime of femicide, of 12.9 in family violence and 7 in human trafficking.

However, figures from this same agency show that January to September 2021, the crime of femicide presents an increase of 5% compared to the same period in 2020; as well as family violence in 17.6% and 11.4% victims of human trafficking.

September of this year was the month with the fewest femicides so far in this government, despite the fact that the month of August was the all-time high, with 105 investigation files for this crime.

Likewise, the federal official explained that 1,277 investigation folders for rape have been opened so far this year; that is, 28.7% more than the previous year. “We will continue working so that this and other crimes are reported, prosecuted and those responsible punished,” he said.

It was also said that through the strategy of attention to the 50 priority municipalities it was detected that Tijuana, Juarez City, Culiacan and Guadalajara The incidence of intentional homicides of women is in the first 10 places, for which meetings have been established with 728 elected mayors to present priority actions to address the problem; Furthermore, 130,923 public servants were trained to deal with violence against women.

Likewise, injuries and intentional homicides, family violence and rapes are the other four crimes that occur most against women in 16 municipalities of priority attention, among which are Ensenada, Mexicali, Tijuana, Chihuahua, Ciudad Juárez, Iztapalapa, Celaya , Irapuato, Guadalajara, Zapopan, Ecatepec, Puebla, Benito Juárez, San Luis Potosí, Culiacán and the center of Tabasco.
