Polarize: play with fire

President López Obrador says that the country is not polarized, on the one hand, he is right, until now his speech has not penetrated the majority of the population and has remained in the political class, but on the outside, political polarization and social should already be present among most people.

López Obrador has always made politics polarizing, rejecting dialogue or agreements with the opposition and the government and seeking to maintain an image different from all the others.

From a young age, as a leader of the PRI in Tabasco, he confronted the government of González Pedrero; As president of the PRD and head of government of Mexico City, he never negotiated with the other parties or with the federal government, and as a candidate for the Presidency he tried to block any PRD agreement with the government or opposition parties.

The strategy has worked for him so far and although as President of the Republic he should seek political agreements, his strategy of polarizing is the only one that he knows and thinks works for him to strengthen his movement and ensure its permanence.

It does not matter to her that her initiatives are blocked as happened with the electrical reform, above her was polarizing people between her project and the others. He knew that the reform was going to be rejected and he decided not to withdraw it in order to polarize the country between liberals and conservatives and nationalists and traitors. The campaign of calling opposition lawmakers traitors was devised by him, as part of his strategy for 2024.

Those who think that he does it out of rancor or resentment are mistaken, he does it because it is the strategy that has worked for him all his life. He knows that he has no chance of penetrating certain social sectors, so the only thing left for him is to strengthen himself among the 50% of the people who follow him.

It would seem stupid for an acting president to call for a consultation to see if he leaves or stays, but that was part of his political strategy since he became president, inventing a pretext in the middle of his six-year term, to appear in the ballots, mobilize their people and get them out to vote.

This strategy of dividing and polarizing is going to be maintained and will surely intensify in the remainder of the six-year term and will be the basis during the campaigns and the 2024 elections.

The political and social polarization in López Obrador’s speech has had a high cost for the country and for the people, although it has been basically discursive, it has caused anguish and fear among many people and especially among national and foreign businessmen who have preferred to propose their investments for better times.

López Obrador bets that political polarization will not get out of hand and lead to physical violence, however, there are radical groups in Morena that are willing to go beyond simple denunciation and will not let themselves be snatched away the government in 2024.

López Obrador is playing with fire, it does not matter if he gets burned, but between his legs he can carry the stability, unity and social peace that the country maintains.
