Plane full of dogs rescued from US lands in Windsor

It was a ruffled summer for many of the four-legged newcomers to Windsor, but they will soon be enjoying the good life.

Windsor-Essex County Humane Society staff and volunteers welcomed the last plane full of pups seeking shelter and a forever loving home Thursday afternoon at Windsor Airport.

Around 73 tired but excited dogs of all sizes and breeds Rescued from several areas of the southern United States hard hit by this summer’s devastating storms were flown to Windsor, where they will be taken in until ready for adoption.

The canines will be isolated for two weeks to check for any medical or behavioral problems and spayed or neutered if necessary.

Thursday’s delivery was the second shipment of abandoned dogs to reach Windsor in the past two months.

The first load arrived in August with 80 dogs from El Paso Animal Services in Texas. Fifty of the airborne dogs were taken in by the local humane society, while another 30 were sent to five shelters in Ontario.

Almost all Texas dogs have been adopted.

The Bissell Pet Foundation facilitated the relocation. He has been working with shelters in a variety of places in the US that have been overwhelmed by summer outings and abandoned animals during hurricanes.
