Catherine Dorion wants to launch a pan-Quebec fight against the third link

All of Quebec must mobilize against the tunnel project between Quebec and Lévis, pleads MP Catherine Dorion who wants to launch a “national” movement against the project similar to that opposed to GNL-Quebec.

“We are going to make this issue a national issue. As we have succeeded with LNG, ”pleads the solidarity member. “We don’t want that toxic gift. Almost half of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Quebec are due to transportation. ”

The third link “will just worsen” these emissions by intensifying urban sprawl, she fears. “It’s a huge project that will cost a lot of money and that our children will still pay for in generations and which in addition is very bad in the fight against climate change.”

The member for Taschereau made these remarks Thursday, on the eve of her interpellation of the Minister of Transport, François Bonnardel, at the National Assembly. The elected officials of the Transport Commission will then have two hours to question him on “the lack of vision of the Caquista government for the development of transport in Quebec in the 21st century”, theme given to the meeting by the member for Taschereau.

Why not the REM ?

According to Ms. Dorion, in addition to being too expensive, the project does not have as much social acceptability as the government claims. “Even in Quebec, it’s very controversial,” she said.

So why not launch a pan-Quebec movement against the Montreal REM, which is also sharply criticized?

“The REM is contested, it’s true. But from a GHG point of view, it is much less damaging than the third link, ”retorts Ms. Dorion. “We try to fight the projects which are the worst”.

Priority of the CAQ government, the tunnel project between Quebec and Lévis could cost nearly $ 10 billion according to government calculations.

The project reached a new milestone this week, when the Ministry of Transport commissioned an impact study of the $ 2 million project from the SNCL-Englobe consortium.

The latest version of the tunnel project would link downtown Lévis to the Expo-Cité areas where the Videotron Center is located. It will consist of a two-storey tunnel, each with three traffic lanes, one of which is reserved for electric buses.

Québec Solidaire argues that the only way to make this project acceptable would be to make it a tunnel reserved for public transport.
