Nuevo León’s steel industry faces the energy transition and fights against climate change

Monterrey, NL. The steel industry from New Lion, is the third largest producer nationwide, behind Coahuila and Michoacán, and faces one of the challenges of the value chain of the sector in Latin America, which is the energy transition and the fight against climate change, which involve large investments to produce greener steel.

The leader in steel production is Coahuila, with 4.89 million tons per year, is followed by Michoacan with 3.74 million tons and New Lion ranks third with 2.84 million tons, according to the X-ray of the Steel Industry in Mexico 2021 from National Chamber of Iron and Steel (Canacero).

One of the main steel producers in the entity is Ternium. Máximo Vedoya, is CEO of Ternium and president of the Latin American Steel Association (Alero), who indicated in a column published by Valora Analitik, that “steel is the protagonist in the fight against climate change and in the energy transition towards a decarbonized economy”.

Ternium’s CEO pointed out that the large regional steel companies in Latin America have launched plans and programs to reduce their carbon footprint by 2030, and continue on this path by 2050, in accordance with the Paris Agreement.

However, they face great challenges such as having to make large investments to produce greener steel, therefore, “dialogue and public-private collaboration is essential,” he mentioned in his column.

In that sense, he commented that next Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 November, the Alero Summit 2021, where “The Future of Industry in a Sustainable World” will be discussed virtually.

The congress will feature the participation of speakers and experts from the region and the world who will give their views on current events and upcoming challenges and opportunities for the steel sector to continue to innovate and generate quality jobs.

These include Jeffrey Sachs, director of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network; Xavier Sala i Martin, Professor of Economics at Columbia University and author of the Global Competitiveness Index; Moisés Naím, director of Foreign Policy (1996-2010) and author of the bestseller “The End of Power”; and Luis Alberto Moreno, former president of the Inter-American Development Bank (2005–2020) and CEO of Allen & Co LLC.

Key industry speakers include Aditya Mittal, CEO of ArcelorMittal, and Paolo Rocca, CEO of Techint Group.

Mexico on the steel map

Mexico is the 15th steel producer in the world, the annual production of finished steel is 16.4 million tons per year and more than 700,000 jobs are generated throughout the sector. The country uses 16.1 Gigajoules (Gj), for every ton of steel produced, 19% less than the world average.

The sustainability of the Mexican steel industry

Clean water and sanitation. The recycled water is used in cooling processes.

Affordable and clean energy. The natural gas contributes 52% of energy consumption. 10% of electricity consumption comes from self-generation.

Responsible consumption and production. The steel industry It is essential in the circular economy, through the reduction of material use, reuse and recycling. Around 7 million tons of steel are recycled annually.

Climate action. The sector participates in the Emissions Trading System program, as part of the mechanisms to reduce Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions.
