Nova Scotia’s Victoria County in State of Emergency Amid Flooding and Road Collapses – Halifax | The Canadian News

Victoria County Township in Cape Breton is in a state of emergency Tuesday night after heavy rains led to flooding and road collapses.

The municipality posted on its Facebook page shortly after 9 pm that residents are “required to shelter in place until further notice.”

“The Provincial Department of Public Works is evaluating roads and bridges for their safety. The crews are working hard, so stay home and let them do their work, ”the post read.

Atlantic Canada is in the middle of a three-day storm, which brings heavy rain and strong winds. The great and heavy storm has stalled in the region.

A rain advisory remains in effect for Victoria County, where 100-140mm of rain is expected. Environment Canada said that rainfall could exceed 200mm “in the highest rainfall areas in parts of Cape Breton.”

The rain is expected to continue through Wednesday.

According to the province road condition report page, there are reports of several road mudslides and floods in the region.

The Cabot Trail in Ingonish Harbor was one of several roads that was closed until further notice.
