No place for Ukrainian students in Quebec schools

Schools in Quebec already filled to capacity will not be able to accommodate any students from Ukraine, as the province prepares to receive an undetermined number of refugees who have left that country.

This is at least what the Center de services scolaire des Découvreurs indicates, which covers the Pointe-de-Sainte-Foy sector in the capital.

“Nothing has been put in place regarding the reception of refugee students. In fact, all of our schools are already at full capacity, so unfortunately this is not something we can envisage, ”explained its spokesperson, Marie-Ève Malouin, in a response sent by email to the Newspaper.

The lack of space concerns both primary and secondary schools, she said.

Roberge asserted the opposite

This statement contrasts with that of the Minister of Education, Jean-François Roberge, who said on Tuesday that the French-language school network had “everything you need” to properly accommodate young Ukrainian refugees in the coming months.

However, the situation seems different at the Center de services scolaire de la Capitale, which serves the central districts of Quebec City in particular. The lack of space does not seem to be an issue there, at least for now.

Everything will depend on the number of Ukrainian children to be educated and above all, in which sector they will come to settle, explains its spokesperson, Marie-Claude Lavoie.

We are preparing to receive students from Ukraine without however having more information on this subject, indicates its secretary general, Martine Chouinard.

Ready to welcome 300 refugees

At the Center multiethnique de Québec, we are still waiting for more information from Quebec in this regard.

Its director general, Natacha Battisti, estimates that the resources in place could accommodate up to 300 Ukrainian refugees in the capital over a period of six months.

A meeting is also planned with representatives of the school community next week, in order to identify in which sectors these families could settle, indicates Ms.me Battisti.
