According to EFRS communications advisor Brittany Lewchuk, fire crews responded to a report of a burning house near 20 Avenue and 112A Street shortly after noon Wednesday. Eight units responded to the call where crews found a smoke-filled house.

Crews brought the fire under control shortly after 12:30 p.m. M., Lewchuk said, and they stated that the fire “went out” just before 3:30 p.m. M.

While there were no human injuries, he added, a large number of reptiles were discovered in the home, most of which were dead, although a gecko and 10 turtles were rescued.

A spokesman for the city of Edmonton said there were approximately 1,000 reptiles at the site.

Animal Care and Control was notified and asked to attend the scene, Lewchuk added, and the fire is still under investigation.
