Most Canadians have no interest in summer international travel: Nanos survey

OTTAWA-

A new survey by Nanos Research shows that three in five Canadians are not interested in traveling internationally this summer.

According to the survey, commissioned by CTV News, 61 per cent are not making any international travel plans, while six per cent of Canadians said they had international travel plans this summer and canceled them. Another three percent said they had booked international travel but can still cancel their trips.

Twelve percent of travelers are undaunted by their travel plans and have no intention of canceling.

The survey comes as travelers have been hit by long wait times at both airports and passport offices, and with a 40-year record high inflation of 7.7 percent.

The Canadian Press reported this week that Air Canada and Toronto’s Pearson airport rank first in the world for flight delays. Massive wait times and flight cancellations have prompted Air Canada to temporarily ban pets from baggage holds.

Meanwhile, at passport offices, Service Canada is struggling to catch up with the wave of applications after a lull during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Canadians over the age of 55 are more likely to say they have no interest in traveling internationally this summer (69%) compared to younger Canadians (18-34: 53%; 35-54: 58%),” he says. the survey. . “Those between the ages of 18 and 34 are more than twice as likely to say they want to travel internationally but have no plans (22 percent) than those over 55 (9 percent).”

The Nanos Research survey also sought to gauge the level of Canadians’ concern about another wave of COVID-19. The numbers show that most respondents have some level of concern that another wave of COVID-19 this fall could cause governments to reinstate certain restrictions.

“Most Canadians are worried (16 percent) or somewhat worried (39 percent) that there will be another wave of the pandemic this fall that will be serious enough to bring back restrictions like mandatory mask wearing, social distancing and the limitation of meetings, while approximately two in five are not worried (23 percent) or somewhat unconcerned (19 percent), ”says the Nanos survey.

Although the provinces have lifted most restrictions, there has been a recent increase in cases in many parts of the country.

METHODOLOGY:

Participants were randomly recruited by phone using live agents and administered an online survey. The sample included land lines and cell phones throughout Canada. Results were statistically verified and weighted for age and sex using the most recent census data, and the sample was geographically stratified to be representative of Canada.

Individuals who randomly called using random digit dialing with a maximum of five callbacks.
