The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology tells us that in 1869, “Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev created the framework that became the modern periodic table, leaving room for elements that had not yet been discovered.” The periodic table arranges the elements in rows and columns in order of their atomic number.
