Monegal’s criticism: Alegría on TV-3, Barbados is now a republic!

Highlighted in the summary of ‘TN migdia’ as the most important news of the day, TV-3 has celebrated with joy that Barbados has become a Republic.

Ah! This sudden enthusiasm for the political ups and downs of a little island in the Caribbean is very nice. I can be wrong, but for me to remember the very few times that TV-3 has told us about Barbados it has been briefly in its meteorology section, for example when it was hit by Elsa, that terrible hurricane.

Now, with the advent of your republic, they have dedicated a very accomplished minute to it. The labels they put on us to underline the news were very good, very sharp, with second readings. One said: “‘Barbados no tea Reina”‘, and another, with subtle insight, and with a touch of pointy snuggling, noticed that Barbados was passing: “‘From God Save the Queen to Bye Bye the Queen”‘.

Ahh! These little things from TV-3 my Papitu flute canary likes a lot. Everything is understood immediately. The speech of the ‘TN’ has not been wasted either. They told us, in a festive and magnificent tone: “Elizabeth II She is no longer the queen of this small country (..) The heir to the monarch (the prince Carlos) observe how his empire is shrinking (…) The ‘Commonwealth’, which was made up of 56 countries, now there are only 15 left that have as queen Elizabeth II “.

It has been, in short, a news treatment with celebratory borders. And I do not blame him at all. Maybe it will have served for a politician to take note and from now on the new illusion will be that we can be the Barbados of the Mediterranean and not so much the Denmark of the South.

It is not nonsense. The economic base of Barbados is no longer so much the cultivation of sugar or tourism, it is above all its status as a tax haven. The European Union includes Barbados on its list (Sept. 2020) of hideouts opaque to the treasury. There are those who think – it is not the first time that I have written it in this column – that a Catalonia established as a tax haven, and outside the EU, would be unbeatable. Ahh! Tremble Switzerland.

Of this wonderful treatment of Barbados on TV-3 I can only add what they have not told us. They have not informed us that their republic has been achieved because it was voted by their parliament, on September 29, by absolute unanimity. Not a vote against. But it is only a small detail that they have forgotten, surely lost in the frenzy of joy.
