QUEBEC — The jury trial of Rimouski MNA Harold LeBel, charged with sexual assault, will begin Nov. 7 and last three weeks.

The 59-year-old announced at the beginning of March that he would not be a candidate in the next general election on Oct. 3, because he could not campaign while preparing for the trial.

LeBel was arrested on Dec. 15, 2020, and quickly expelled from the Parti Québécois caucus. He only returned to the National Assembly last week, where he is serving the rest of his mandate as an independent MNA. He pleaded not guilty to the charges, which stem from events alleged to have taken place in 2017. The identity of the presumed victim is protected by a publication ban.
