Mexico wastes leadership from LA, say academics

Before the speech of the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador during the session of the UN Security Council on November 9, specialists agreed that it was sought to legitimize the domestic policy agenda, losing the opportunity to raise the vision of politics abroad and balance relationships in the future on issues such as climate change and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Carlos Pérez Ricart, professor-researcher at the Center for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE), considered that the president’s speech – like any other in that forum – sought to have internal repercussions; not external. “His merit must be measured in this way and only in this way. In that metric it was a success ”.

Regarding his proposals, such as the World Fraternity and Welfare Plan, he considered that the Mexican president could exercise that leadership in other forums, such as the G20, to better channel them.

For Abelardo Rodríguez, Professor-Researcher in the Department of International Studies at the Ibero-American University, he opined that despite the fact that the anti-corruption issue is important, the opportunity to be able to dialogue on pressing issues for humanity, build bridges between Mexico and Latin America and the global south with Africa and the Middle East.

“The world requires long-range propositional visions for the global south to dialogue with the global north on the challenges for humanity,” said Rodríguez.
