Mexico hands over to Guatemala an alleged drug trafficker wanted by the US

Mexican authorities handed over Guatemala to an alleged drug trafficker requested in extradition by USA on drug charges, reported this Monday the Public ministry (MP, Prosecutor’s Office) Guatemalan.

The Guatemalan identified as Juan Luis Ortiz Lopezwho was in Mexican territory, “was located with the support of the authorities of that country, for which he was expelled to Guatemala where the arrest warrant was issued,” he told reporters Juan Luis PantaleonMP spokesman.

Ortiz López is required by a US court in the state of Texas (South of USA) for “conspiracy to manufacture and distribute” cocaine, the official added.

According to the investigations, the alleged drug trafficker is the nephew of the Guatemalan John Ortizaliases “Chamale“, extradited to the United States in 2014 for drug trafficking and linked to the Sinaloa cartel.

Chamalé was sentenced in 2015 to 20 years in prison by the justice of the state of Florida.

Police arrested on Sunday at the Guatemala City International Airport two Mexicans wanted for extradition by the United States justice system, also for drug trafficking.

The international cartels use Guatemala and the rest of Central America, with the help of local drug lords, to move cargoes of drug Y money launderingactivities that lead to criminal violence.

Washington calculates that 90% of the cocaine that reaches the United States does so in small planes, boats and even submarines through Mexico and Central America.
