Mexico closed 2021 with a record number in the number of refugee applications: Comar

Mexico registered in 2021 a record number in the number of refugee applications, the main applicants being Haitian migrants, reported on Monday the head of the Mexican Commission for Refugee Aid (Comar), Andres Ramirez.

The official wrote on his Twitter account that in 2021 he closed with a total of 131,448 procedures, 86.84% more than the amount reported in 2019, when most of the applicants were Honduran citizens.

“The main nationalities (who requested refuge) were Haitians, Hondurans by far and later Cubans,” the official said in an interview with Reuters.

Around the figure for 2021, he explained that 72% received a positive response to their process and another 2% were also granted complementary protection.

For many years, Mexico It has been the passage of tens of thousands of migrants who mostly go to the United States, but according to international organizations such as the UN it has also become a destination nation, either through refuge or asylum.

Attending to the large number of migrants, many of them arriving en masse to the country after fleeing the violence and poverty of their nations, is currently one of the main challenges of the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which has tried to contain flows.
