Mexicans lose their fear of Covid-19 and take off their face masks

Most Mexicans have lost their fear of the Covid-19 pandemic, to the point that they have begun to lower their guard against the risk of contagion; while the fear of growing crime in the country continues to rise, as shown by the one hundred and ninth National Coronavirus Survey in Mexico Realized by Consult Mitofsky.

49.4% of the Mexicans surveyed admitted to having “a lot” or “some” fear of dying from Covid-19; This is the lowest level recorded since April 2020, when the pandemic had started less than a month.

This week, 31 states in the country were located in the green color of the epidemic risk traffic light that will be in force from March 7 to 20 of this year, while Querétaro will remain in yellow, which would imply the end of the fourth wave of Covid-19 infections that was registered during January and February of this year and whose increase in cases was mainly attributed to the presence of the Omicron variantcharacterized by being more contagious than the other variants detected so far worldwide.

56.5% of the people surveyed responded that they are still “very” or “somewhat” afraid of being infected with the coronavirus that has caused the death of 319,901 people, according to the official figure from the Ministry of Health published this Monday, March 7. Meanwhile, four out of 10 people said they had “little” or “nothing” afraid of getting infected.

This panorama is reflected in the perception of the people surveyed by Consult Mitofsky who consider that in their environment there are people infected with the coronavirus, which has dropped in one month from 72% to 57 percent. Meanwhile, 37.6% think that there are no infected people in the places they frequent.

Regarding sanitary measures to avoid contagion, 76% of the people consulted affirm that they always use a face mask when leaving home, this is the lowest percentage registered since December 2020 when the second wave of Covid-19 cases began in the country.

20.8% of those surveyed admitted that they only use the mask “sometimes” as a preventive measure.

It should be noted that although most entities have relaxed the restrictions to control the spread of the Covid-19the health authorities have urged to maintain health protocols such as constant hand washing, healthy distance and, mainly, continue to suggest the use of face masks.

In the comparison of the main fears among Mexicans, Consult Mitofsky stressed that for the first time since the disease caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, the percentage of Mexicans who fear getting infected is 7 percent. While 50% of the people consulted said they were more afraid of being a victim of a crime, the maximum recorded since this demographic exercise began.

In the comparison of the main fears among Mexicans, the fear that the personal economy will be affected was 29.5 percent.

Although Mexicans are less afraid of Covid-19, In the survey carried out from March 4 to 6, 2022, the majority of those interviewed (48%) considered that there will be new variants of this virus and “there is still a long way to go” to return to normality.

Approval of AMLO’s management continues to decline

Although the daily figures of infections and deaths from Covid-19 have been lower in recent weeks, the approval of the work of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in the face of the epidemic in Mexico continues with a downward trend.

Positive opinions about the management of Lopez Obrador they are located at 54.5%, which implies a fall of 7 points from the 61.7% registered during January.

To carry out this exercise, the survey house directed by Roy Campos interviewed 1,000 Mexicans over 18 years of age with smart mobile devices with Internet access. “The results are not simple frequencies, but estimates based on the post-stratification of the sample calculated on expansion factors according to four demographic variables (population by entity, sex, age and schooling) obtained from the last public census”, he details. . This survey has a sample design.
