Megan Heyhurst makes history as first female SJHL play-by-play announcer | The Canadian News

In recent years, women have made history in the sports world. At the end of 2021, Megan Heyhurst wrote her name in the books.

On December 20, 2021, Heyhurst made history in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).

“When I talk to the SJHL today, it now appears that I’m actually the first woman to name a game,” she said on her very first broadcast with the La Ronge Ice Wolves.

It happened almost by accident.

Already part of the Ice Wolves organization, she was asked to step in as a play-by-play announcer halfway through the 2021-2022 season.

She was a hit, and her husband Mike even joined as her color commentator, and will be by her side for the rest of the season.

“At the end of the hockey game, people shouted and cheered at us and said we have to do it again,” said Megan.

However, she does much more for the team than just play-for-play.

Social media coordinator, mother of three, Ice Wolves ticket ma, podcasts, photographer, friend and wife … Heyhurst does it all.

Since Megan joined the organization, she first started as a billet mom for players coming from other places to play with the Ice Wolves.

Then she was asked to be their team photographer and was hired to take photos of the players during the match.

She then accepted the role as the social media coordinator where she started making social media segments with the players and a podcast for the team.

As the play-by-play announcer, Megan’s husband, Mike Heyhurst, joked, saying she’s barely getting any sleep.

In fact, during one match, she was even able to breastfeed while announcing.

Heyhurst mentioned that she is showing her children that anything is possible.

“I feel quite proud of her. “I just love hearing her voice whenever she gets on the show,” said her 12-year-old son, Kacen Heyhurst.

Those who know her are not surprised by the workload she has taken on.

Mike said his wife does nothing with half the effort, she rather jumps right in with whatever task she tackles with full force.

“She gets an idea and she just runs with it.”

Friend and supporter Thomas Sierzycki agrees, Megan has always been one who has done great things.

“It’s great that she’s a forerunner and we’re just very motivated to support her,” Sierzycki said.

Although Megan feels she’s the lucky one to have had such an opportunity, Ice Wolves board member Randy Johns said they’re the lucky ones.

“She’s coming up with a really good resume, and so you know, even if she had not been from La Ronge and so on, she would probably have been appointed if she had applied for the job.”

When Megan grew up, she always looked up female broadcaster Hazel Mae.

Now she hopes to be an inspiration to other women who also want to enter sports.

“Do not give up. You are going to have someone who wants to take over or does not think you are good enough … Just keep going and prove them better, ”Megan said.
