With COVID-19 cases seemingly out of control in Michigan and several hospitals struggling to keep up, the US military is sending medical personnel to help.

“We have been working with the federal government and hospitals across the state to do the evaluations and these were the first two that were prioritized, but we also continue to do evaluations of other hospitals across the state,” Hertel said, according to WDIV. .

The state health department reported that as of Wednesday there were 17,003 new cases of the virus during the previous two-day period in Michigan. There are nearly 4,000 people hospitalized due to COVID-19, roughly 150 below the highest number to date in the state that occurred during the previous wave in April.

About 73 percent of all Michigan cases in the past month have been among residents who are not fully vaccinated, the state health department said. About 72 percent of hospitalizations and 76 percent of deaths have occurred among people who are not fully vaccinated.

Beaumont Hospital will host 22 medical staff members starting next week, WDIV said. The additional staff will stay for 30 days and could be extended, if necessary.

“Today, we know that many hospitals across the state are facing challenges in serving the people who come to their doors,” Hertel said. “Some have to temporarily close their emergency rooms because they don’t have the capacity to see patients in a timely manner. So this (additional staff) will absolutely help ensure that they can take care of those who are coming in. “
