María José Alcalá will be the first woman to preside over the Mexican Olympic Committee

The Olympic exclavadista Maria Jose Alcala on Thursday became the first woman elected to the presidency of the Mexican Olympic Committee (COM) for the period 2021-2024 as successor to Carlos Padilla Becerra.

“Maryjose Alcalá becomes the first woman to preside over the Mexican Olympic Committee in 98 years of the organism’s history “, the COM announced on social networks after the election process of its new Executive Committee.

Alcalá Izguerre won the election with 87 votes against the 46 that Norma Olivia González, director of the National System of Physical Culture and Sports, obtained as a candidate, in addition to three null votes.

The 136 registered votes were cast by permanent COM members, representatives of Olympic federations and non-Olympic federations.

Originally from Mexico City, Maryjose Alcalá, 49, participated as a diver in four Olympic Games: Seoul-1988, Barcelona-1992, Atlanta-1996 and Sydney-2000. In 1994 she was recognized with the National Sports Award. He is a permanent member of the International Olympic Committee.

In 2002, he completed a law degree at the Justo Sierra University and subsequently completed a master’s degree in Public Administration and a master’s degree in Sports Organizations.

In 2018, she was Chief of Mission of the Mexican delegation that participated in the Central American and Caribbean Games that were held in Barranquilla, Colombia.

Since September 2021 she entered the Federal Congress as a deputy and participates in the Sports and Radio and Television Commissions.

The outgoing president Carlos Padilla Becerra concluded its last annual report this Thursday and handed over the position to Alcalá, who will be president of the COM until the end of the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
