Germany tries to react to the soaring of Covid-19 cases

The epidemic of Covid-19 accelerates in Germany, which this Thursday exceeded the threshold of 50,000 daily infections and registers more and more hospitalizations, which has forced the future chancellor Olaf Scholz to react to the delicate situation.

The social democrat, which should happen to Angela Merkel, is facing his first crisis, although he is not expected to take office until December, when negotiations between his party, the SPD, environmentalists and liberals.

The future german government it faces a new wave of infections that has accelerated since the end of the boreal summer and that affects European countries where the vaccination rate is still insufficient.

Like Germany, Austria, Holland and Switzerland register an increase in cases.

The epidemic has been affecting Bulgaria and Romania, which have the lowest vaccination rates in the European Union (EU).

Instead, Spain, the country with the most vaccinated people on the continent, has got rid of this outbreak.

Germany recorded a record number of new infections Thursday, with 50,196 more cases in 24 hours.

“Politicians should have reacted much earlier to the clear analyzes of science and introduced a coherent regulation at the national level,” lamented on Thursday Martin Stratmann, president of the Max Planck Scientific Institute.

Emergency meeting

Olaf Scholz it tries to dispel criticism about the country’s lack of preparation.

Future coalition partners presented Thursday at the Parliament a package of measures that includes a new vaccination campaign, the return of free tests and the imposition of restrictions on those who do not get vaccinated.

“We have to take very numerous necessary measures to get through this winter. We must put our country under shelter this winter,” urged Scholz, Minister of Economy of the outgoing government of Angela Merkel, to the deputies.

“A very, very large number of those who are not vaccinated will become infected (…) It is what we hope,” he warned, calling for the reopening of the vaccination centers.

The proposals, if approved, should go into effect by the end of the month.

However, the three parties ruled out making vaccination mandatory, even for health personnel.

For next Thursday an emergency meeting has been called between the federal government and the regions.

The outbreak is attributed in part to the relatively low vaccination rate of the population in Germany, just over 67%.

Health Minister Jens Spahn recently called the new wave a “pandemic of the unvaccinated.”

Carnival

The seven-day incidence rate, which measures the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants, now stands at 249, the highest since the start of the pandemic, with alarming situations in the regions of Saxony (521), Thuringia (469.2) the Bavaria (427).

The 24-hour death toll is on the rise, reaching 235 on Thursday.

The pressure on hospitals is increasing, although the number of patients from Covid-19 in intensive care, which is currently 2,739, is still far from last December’s record (5,762).

Germany It has had to start transferring patients from the worst affected regions to hospitals that can accommodate them.

Angela Merkel He said Wednesday that the resurgence of infections in the country was “dramatic.”

Several affected states have already started putting pressure on people who have not been vaccinated or who cannot show that they have recovered from the disease.

From Monday, Berlin it will prohibit them from entering restaurants without terraces, bars, gyms and hairdressers.

The so-called “2G” system, which stands for “geimpft” (vaccinated) or “genesen” (cured), has already come into force this week in Saxony.

Several political leaders asked to cancel one more year the traditional Christmas markets in the most affected regions.

But the outbreak of the epidemic did not prevent the carnival of Colonia in a festive setting for a vaccinated or cured audience.

“The risk is reasonable,” Uwe Schörnig, treasurer of a carnival association, told AFP as the masked crowd gathered in the heart of the old city.
