A man is in critical condition after a work accident Saturday afternoon at Grande Roue in Montreal’s Old Port.

Montreal police spokesman Jean-Pierre Brabant said the force received a call about an employee who was injured at the scene. When they arrived at the scene, they found a 22-year-old man who was seriously injured. He was taken to hospital.

The man had been doing maintenance work while the Ferris wheel was closed, a Grande Roue spokesperson confirmed Saturday night.

In a statement shortly before 6 p.m., the Grande Roue said it cannot comment on the situation while an investigation is under way and that the Ferris wheel will remain closed until further notice.

“Our thoughts are with our employee and those who are close to him,” the statement said.

Brabant said the investigation is being carried out by the Commission for Standards, Equity, Health and Safety at Work (CNESST).
