Man charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting officers

A Toronto man is in custody and faces 12 counts, including two counts of attempted murder, after allegedly firing a gun at police officers Saturday morning.

Toronto police say they responded to a report of a collision in the area of Hilton Avenue and St. Clair Avenue West just before 8 a.m. on Saturday.

A man driving a white 2021 Kia Forte allegedly collided with another vehicle and fled the scene. Police spokesman David Hopkinson said the man was located a short time later near an underground parking lot in the area.

A policeman statement Saturday alleges that the suspect pulled out a pistol and began firing when officers attempted to arrest him. The man was also reportedly able to take a taser pistol that belonged to one of the officers.

The police were able to arrest him with the help of a citizen. Two officers suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

Michael Katz, 35, of Toronto is expected to appear in court at Old City Hall on Sunday morning.

Anyone with information should contact the police at 416-808-1300.
