Black day for the world of rallying in Spain. Jaime Gil and Diego Calvo, driver and co-driver respectively, have suffered a serious accident going off the road during one of the specials, specifically in section six. They lost control of their Seat Marbella in the area of the descent of the The Alto del Fitu without being able to straighten it and embedding itself against a stone bridge, according to local media. Both were Cantabrians and the test has been suspended.
The emergency services have tried to save the lives of the occupants, but it has not been possible. At the moment, what happened is being investigated. After an emergency meeting in the closed park, all the participants together with the organization have decided this cancellation as a sign of respect for the deceased. The test was led by Ivan Ares (Hyundai I20 R5), with Surhayen Pernía (Hyundai I20 R5) second and the local driver Oscar Palacio (Ford Fiesta R5 Rally 2) in third place overall.
This Friday the rally started with three special stages, very difficult due to the asphalt and wet in certain areas. It was the fourth time that this event had been disputed, which in this edition had 270 registered.
