It sends nearly 6,000 migrants to Mexico by air

As the United States government has tightened its immigration actions under Title 42 – which allows the immediate expulsion of foreigners considering a high risk of contagion from Covid-19 – Mexico has accepted thousands of migrants deported by air, according to data of the National Institute of Migration (INM).

According to information provided by said institute, via transparency, until the beginning of last September 5,985 migrants from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador were sent from the United States to Mexico.

The data, provided in the information request with folio 0411100072121, do not allow us to identify whether the almost 6,000 migrants, from the three countries of Central America mentioned, were deported to their countries of origin, however, NGOs have warned of express deportations .

According to the information provided by the INM, the migrants received by Mexico were treated under articles 1,2,3 fraction XXVIII; 16, section II, 19, 20, sections I, II and III, 36, 52, 54, 57, among others more of the Migration Law, as well as articles 54, 193, 194, 214, 240, 241, among others, of the Regulation of the same norm.

Said articles of the law and the regulations provide from assisted repatriation mechanisms, to the possibility of requesting refuge or the regularization of the stay of a foreign person in national territory.

However, the Collective for the Observation and Monitoring of Human Rights in Southeast Mexico (COMDHSEM) has reported that the people expelled from the United States – families, women with girls and boys and men – were transported by Mexican authorities in buses. from the INM to Talismán, on the border with Guatemala, where they were forced to leave Mexico and abandoned at the border bridge.

The flights with migrants, the civil organization has emphasized, are part of the measures of the Joe Biden administration to accelerate the expulsions of migrants under Title 42, and are in addition to actions by the Mexican State to contain and return applicants for refuge.

The coordinated expulsions between US and Mexican authorities, COMDHSEM has highlighted, violate international law and lack legal and administrative support.

Guatemalans, those with the greatest number

It is worth mentioning that the United States announced last August the beginning of actions to transport Central American families to the south of our country in an effort to deter migration and after having reinforced its deportation policy due to the advance of the SARS-CoV pandemic. two.

In this context, in August, the US government sent 4,633 migrants of Central American origin to Mexico. While, between September 1 and 8, 1,352 people were transported by air.

By nationality, most of the migrants transferred to Mexico came from Guatemala (4,836), followed by Honduras (1,063) and only 86 Salvadorans.
