Inflation: food banks in high demand

A sharp rise in inflation and overdue measures are causing increased demand for food banks.

Fortunately, Moisson Estrie can count on the support of food markets and big-box stores like Costco to supply them with perishable foodstuffs. Thus, every day, Moissons Estrie trucks recover food surpluses.

Last year, these collections made it possible to redistribute 905 tons of food.

For the owners of these food businesses, it’s a way to reduce waste. Just because foods like meat, baked goods, and fruits and vegetables are approaching their best before date doesn’t mean they’re no longer safe to eat.

Some prepared meals and prepackaged sandwiches are redistributed to food assistance or redirected to organizations such as Chaudronnée de l’Estrie or Partage Saint-François. The rest is processed in the organization’s own kitchens.

Inflation and rising food prices directly impact the organization’s ability to meet the growing demand for emergency supplies. These donations of perishable foodstuffs from some sixty companies and businesses therefore constitute essential assistance for Moisson Estrie.

For the 2020-2021 season, more than 900,000 kg of food have been redistributed to people who badly need it.
