Inegi: Covid, first cause of death in the 1st semester of 2021

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported that during the first half of last year, 145,159 people died in Mexico from Covid-19, which considers respiratory disease to be the leading cause of death nationwide; In 2020, the first year of the SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic, the coronavirus was the second leading cause of death in the country.

According to the preliminary report on registered deaths, 579,596 were recorded in the period from January to June 2021; the figure adds 110,312 more deaths than those confirmed in the first half of the previous year.

The statistics released by the autonomous body emphasize that according to the calculation of excess deaths due to all causes, 532,549 deaths were recorded.

“According to the 2015-2019 period, a total of 1 116 482 deaths were expected from January 2020 to June 2021 and 1 649 031 deaths occurred, so there is an excess of deaths due to all causes of 532 549, equivalent to 47, 7 percent, “he says.

From January 2020 to June 2021, a preliminary total of 345,415 deaths due to Covid-19 were recorded; the total includes 30 unspecified cases with respect to the date of occurrence in 2020 and 19 in 2021.

Unlike 2020, when heart disease was the leading cause of death in the national area, it was recorded during the first half of 2021 that 113,899 people lost their lives to this condition and in the third place 74,418 people died due to diabetes mellitus.

Of the total deaths provisionally registered between January and June last year, 337,100 (58.1%) correspond to men and 242,156 (41.8%) to women; in 340 cases (0.1%) the sex was not specified.

During the first three months of 2021, the highest number of registered deaths occurred: 162,734 (28.1%) in January, 115,560 (19.9%) in February and 93,418 (16.1%) in March.

Mexico City and the state of Mexico led the death register with 77,509 and 72,435, respectively, although when only deaths are considered by the deceased’s ordinary residence, the data are reversed with 87,740 and 60,178 cases.

In terms of the death rate registered according to the state of incidence per 10,000 inhabitants, the country’s capital is also in the first place with 100.26 men and 68.78 women.

The report explains that the preliminary data comes from administrative records generated from death certificates provided by the Civil Registration Offices and the Forensic Medical Services, supplemented by death certificates issued by the Civil Registry and information from statistical notebooks of the Agencies of the Public Ministry. , and that the final information will be published next October after the corresponding review with the Ministry of Health.
