Families who entertain regularly may feel that the conventional eating nook found in some homes is not up to par.

No one wants to be crammed into a space well beyond their capacity, trying to relax and socialize while dining. Those experiences are memorable for the wrong reasons.

At Hawthorne by Excel Homes, these experiences take a different turn thanks to its elegant formal dining room. This model is 2,568 square feet and is now presented as a show home in the Livingston community of northwest Calgary.

While its sunny, rear-facing nook can host many types of occasions, the central dining room is where much of the family’s most important hosting will take place. In front of the stairs that lead to the second level, in the show house is the dining room with a table for six people.

The wallpaper used in the show home’s dining room differentiates it from other parts of the main level and also elevates its visual interest.

The nook is arranged with a table for four and connects to the adjacent great room and kitchen through an open concept layout. The kitchen also has seating for guests, in the form of three chairs at the kitchen island eating bar.

Everyone has their place, meaning there’s no need to clumsily squeeze a stool between two guests at the corner of a table.

There are two cooking spaces in this house. One is the aforementioned conventional kitchen, which has an L-shaped design, and the other is a spice kitchen.

This is an enclosed area with oven, cabinets and sink, largely intended to restrict the spread of food aromas to other ends of the main floor.

In addition to the idea of entertaining, it also provides the home chef with additional cooking capacity. Plus, this is a useful space to store the inevitable mess that comes with preparing a big meal while guests finish up.

The main kitchen is showcased with stainless steel appliances including a wall oven, French door refrigerator and fireplace hood.

People who work from home are primed for privacy. Just off the dining room, a flex room is closed off by double doors. It presents itself as an office, but can take many different forms, depending on the needs of the home.

On the second level, all bedrooms have a walk-in closet and two of them have a private bathroom. Both secondary bedrooms are equipped to meet the long-term needs of the family’s children.

The largest secondary bedroom measures 13 feet 11 inches by 10 feet three inches. The adjacent bedroom has windows on several walls that help fill the space with natural light.

There is a full bathroom near these bedrooms that features a dual-sink vanity beneath a full-width mirror. This allows more than one person to use this space at the same time.

The same concept is used in the master bathroom. Its other high notes include a deep soaking tub and full-height tiled shower along with a black-framed glass door.

The main closet is rectangular in shape and generously proportioned.

Dividing the master bedroom from the secondary bedrooms is a central bonus room that features a striking angled ceiling design.
