Iberdrola users in Nuevo León will have to seek interconnection with CFE before contract expires

Monterey, NL. At the end of this month, the legacy interconnection contract that the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) awarded the plant Sweet Names of Iberdrola, for 500 MW. However, he has not yet received permission from the CRE to migrate to Wholesale Electricity MarketTherefore, users (including 400 companies) will need to seek interconnection with the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).

That’s how he considered it Dear Villarreal, HUB of Nuevo León Energy Grouping, during a conference for the Mexican Institute of Finance Managers (IMEF) Monterrey.

“We understand that Iberdrola’s permit expires, we know that it was the easiest thing for the government to withdraw them, or that they could migrate to the Wholesale Electricity Market and facilitate that process; if not, the user has no choice but to go with CFE ”, he pointed out.

“Iberdrola is a global company, this business represents less than 5% of its generation, I think we as a country need the investment of this type of company,” emphasizes the manager.

He explained that the delivery capacity of the electrical system is limited to 50 643 Megawatts (MW), and in extreme conditions CFE plants can be rehabilitated, but it is obsolete due to their age and that they use fossil fuels.

In total, there are valid permits for 129 362 MW, of which 96 872 MW are in operation, but the capacity delivered is 50 643 MW, because only 63% is delivered and the other 37% is impossible to deliver, the data indicate to.of the Nuevo Leon Energy Grouping.

He stressed that which reduces the risk that units 3 and 4 of the Iberdrola plant in Dulces Nombres, ceases to supply 500 MW, is that Nuevo León is part of the North Gulf division of CFE, which is the area with the highest energy production.

“The critical maximum demand peak is 50 000 MW, we are talking about 500 MW, it is somewhat marginal, it can be supplied by CFE, the northern wave division is the one with the largest capacity, and from here we send energy to other regions of the country, we could send much more if we had better transmission lines from CFE, ”said Villarreal.

The maximum demand in the national interconnected system in Megawatts, was reduced from -5 to 21.2% from 2018 to 2020, when the immediate maximum demand of the national interconnected system is compared, in 2018 it was 46,813 MW, and in 2020 it dropped to 44,551 MW, according to data from National Energy Control Center (Price).

He elaborated that there are wind and solar power plants in Nuevo León that, if the government allows them to supply what is left of the auctions, of the availability of energy that is in the Wholesale Electricity Market, they can supply this 500 MW, “the problem is that when we talk about the Electric Reform, we are talking about a much higher figure in MW and there if it is in the whole country, it is a serious problem ”.
