Hundreds evacuated due to fire in Solsona

The fire in the apartment block in the center of Solsona led to the evacuation of one hundred residents, 79 residents of them from three nearby buildings located in the Plaza del Camp and Paseo del Pare Claret. The firefighters worked with 11 teams to put out the fire and see the risk of collapse of the block in question due to the appearance of a large crack in the facade “which is gradually opening up”. The emergency crews also had to put out a fire that affected a pile of debris and wood in the patio of the 1st floor, although the tasks were slow due to the fragile stability of the building. The notice of the fire was received in the early hours of Sunday morning – at 02:40 am – at number 10 of the Plaza del Camp and initially forced the 21 occupants of the directly affected building to be evicted.

The flames completely burned one floor on the second floor and several more floors were affected by the temperature and water of the extinction. No personal injury occurred. The 21 residents affected were moved with family and into the Gran Sol Hotel, on Manresa Road, according to the Solsona City Council. Finally, the occupants of the three adjoining buildings also had to relocate.

The mayor, Judit Gisbert, explained that after two frustrated attempts to revive the fire, the municipal architect would go in for a first evaluation of the block’s structural damage when it was considered safe enough. At the same time, all the evicted neighbors – eventually hundreds – are being called to relocate to hotels or other municipal facilities, while others have gone to the homes of family and friends. In this sense, Gisbert thanked the cooperative attitude that the affected had at all times after the fire, which was initially “very violent”, as he said.

In statements to the ACN, the mayor also warned that there was a “significant crack” in the lateral facade and that firefighters feared a collapse would not occur, something that has not yet been ruled out. The bombers did not report that their intervention ended until nine o’clock at night.

The Mossos will simultaneously investigate the causes of the incident and are also in the area to guarantee the work of the emergency services. On the other hand, the procedures are expected to start at the insurance companies this Monday so that they can offer a solution to the residents affected by the fire.

Gisbert indicated that the origin of the fire, which took place shortly after half past two in the morning, is tentatively unknown. At that point, a neighbor called the Local Police and warned that he had a fire in his house and the emergency equipment was activated. Over the course of the hours, the mayor confirmed that there is no record of any injured person.

One of the evicted neighbors, Àlex Huerta, explained how early Sunday morning he was watching television and when he went to sleep on the couch, there was an explosion. “The windows were opened, the TV fell and it was full of fire,” he told ACN. Huerta said he could not access the house right now just to get some of his belongings, and that he was staying in a hotel at the moment.
