Home office injects vigor into the furniture industry

By 2021, suppliers to the furniture industry estimate a 22% annual growth in sales, which makes them one of the winning sectors of the pandemic, by attracting new buyers from the United States and Canada, after the commercial blockade that It leads the northern neighbor with China, said Alberto Vázquez, president of the Mexican Association of Suppliers of the Wood and Furniture Industry (AMPIMM).

He affirmed that the following year will remain positive for the production chain of the furniture industry, after the demand for wooden furniture and the like for the home office increased in the domestic market, derived from the pandemic, whose inertia continues.

From January to October 2021, the activity of furniture manufacturing in Mexico accumulates an increase of 2.6% compared to the same period of 2019, making it one of the 10 manufacturing branches in the country that has managed to recover its level prior to the pandemic.

Manufacturing activity as a whole is lagging 2.8%, while industrial activity as a whole (which includes the mining, electricity, gas and water and construction subsectors) is 4.4% below the 2019 level.

Alberto Vázquez reported that in recent days he made visits with businessmen from the United States and Canada to attract business in Mexico and they will come to see the facilities.

“Next year we see it very positive. The following year will be better because the relations of the United States with China and other nations with Asians that are furniture suppliers, have conflicts and continue to benefit Mexican suppliers, who are making contacts to supply furniture to the United States and Canada “, Held.

As economies have reopened and recovered in several countries in the world, the demand for furniture products and supplies grew and many factories reached the production peak, and without being able to meet all that demand.

The problem, he added, were container shipping prices that rose to $ 15,000, a very large figure compared to the $ 2,000 or $ 2,200 per container that it cost prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, so supplies from Asia , Now they are beginning to be supplied from Mexico, and in other cases they have become more expensive.

However, it is attractive for North American entrepreneurs to do business in Mexico and to be supplied with furniture and wood supplies. “Some (entrepreneurs) already have businesses signed to provide furniture and others are waiting to achieve something (next year).”

In Mexico we are interested in providing the quality of the products and the associates we have are international companies, said Alberto Vázquez, stating that they have high quality products that help companies to export to the United States.

The director of MEM Industrial, Azul Ogazón, mentioned that the entire value chain of the wood and furniture transformation industry will be supported under six categories: forestry technology; machinery and industry 4.0; supply; upholstery, since the national market has been growing and there is great potential to export, which is the most important thing.
