GPPL: Use technology in GPPL

Article content

The end of 2021 sees the closure of two major tech-related projects that GPPL has been working on: the Creative Technology Project and the 3D Printer Project. Both were funded through a bequest left by the late Willie Janssen and highlight the importance of technology to the Grande Prairie Public Library and the local community.

The Creative Technology Project provides three high-end computers in our computer lab dedicated to creating and editing projects ranging from marketing graphics to architectural models. Computers feature audio, image, and video editing software, 2D + 3D rendering software, programming + video game creation software, and more. For a complete list, visit our website, but you will definitely recognize names like Photoshop, AutoCAD, and Unity. https://www.gppl.ca/Using-the-Library2/Services/Makerspace-Tech/Creative-Computers

The Creative Technology Project also provides available technology for our programs and events, including a green screen, light box, camera, microphones, and drawing tablets. We typically run a “creation space room” regularly several times a month for people to use the equipment for projects during set times, but due to current government restrictions, that service is temporarily on hold. To make up for that, we’re introducing a podcasting kit, green screen, light ring, two drawing tablets, and a microphone into our Stuff Library. Those items will be available at the end of January, so stay tuned!

Our 3D Printing service is available to the public since mid-May. Since then, we’ve printed more than 100 projects for the Grande Prairie community, from replacement parts to cookie cutters to game parts. Most of the print files we receive come from resource websites like Thingiverse, but we have received some custom pieces as well. The service is mostly free, we only charge for the price of the used filament, and at $ 0.15 a gram it can be much cheaper than some alternatives.

If you’re interested in learning more about how to 3D print in GPPL, our website runs through the details, including where to find resources and how to send us prints. https://www.gppl.ca/Using-the-Library2/Services/Makerspace-Tech/3D-Printing

Re-Gift to GPPL:

Just got a third instant pot from your in-laws? Did you replace your old stand mixer with a cooler model during Boxing Day sales? Consider donating to the GPPL Stuff Library! We are currently seeking kitchen supply donations, as well as other common requests, by the beginning of 2022. Contact Clayton at [email protected] or 780-357-7453 for more information. Items must be in new or slightly used condition.

The Things Library is a great resource for items you may not want to invest in before trying or for items that cost a lot of money for one use only. So the next time you’re cleaning your garage or kitchen, consider donating tools and equipment to GPPL for community use rather than taking them to a thrift store. https://www.gppl.ca/Using-the-Library2/Collections/Library-of-Things/Library-of-Things-Donations
