Global logistics crises hit the Queretaro auto industry

Querétaro, Qro. The persistence of the semiconductor deficit and the increase in logistics costs globally continue to affect the performance of the state’s automotive industry.

The production projections that the local industry had planned for the second half of the year will not reach their goal, mainly due to the shortage of chips, which would generate an average drop of 10% in manufacturing, in relation to the forecasts. scheduled for this end of the year.

The president of the Querétaro Automotive Cluster, Renato Villaseñor Mendoza, explained that the state’s automotive companies face from a 30% drop in projected production for this period to an increase of 5% for some companies, which generates a decrease of 10 % on average, in relation to sector projections.

Currently, the cars that are manufactured are those with the highest demand in the market, as well as those that generate the greatest profit for the assemblers; The demand for auto parts and components that the industry is receiving depends on these two precepts, hence the variations in demand faced by some or other local companies.

The sector’s estimate was to reach the second half of 2021 with an improvement in production capacities, projecting a rebound to resume what was stopped being produced in the first half; however, the semiconductor supply chain has not been replenished.

“The situation continues to be delicate (…) we had the planning that in the second semester the volumes that had stopped being produced in the first half of the year would be able to rebound, the reality is that it will not be like that; Furthermore, the projection that we have is a global drop of more than 10% in vehicle production; it is affected by the issue of semiconductors ”, he explained.

It is estimated that this year 10.5 million automobiles will no longer be produced in the world, as a result of the shortage of semiconductors, in relation to the annual projection. For 2022 the estimates still show a downward trend, foreseeing that it will be for 2023 when the manufacturing volume will increase.

In addition to the drop in demand from the automotive industry, this sector faces supply problems due to pressures in the logistics chains, which have made the importation of certain inputs more expensive.

Challenge

Therefore, the industry faces increasing its level of efficiency, innovation and flexibility to digest the abrupt changes that lead to sudden ups, downs or stabilization in its production chains, depending on the rate at which semiconductors arrive at assemblers. .

In this way, intermittent technical stoppages continue, a work system that has become a tool to face the conditions that the market is experiencing worldwide.
