General Motors renews its portfolio in Mexico and bets on compact SUVs

Huatulco Oax. Despite being one of the companies with the greatest impact due to the shortage of semiconductors, General Motors does not stop and renews its portfolio of vehicles in the Mexican market with new products where it did not have a presence, such as small SUVs, with the commitment of attract consumers from the subcompact segment.

For the Detroit automaker, the lack of semiconductors is a “temporary” matter, which although it has stopped production and limited sales, the conversion of products represents an opportunity to reposition the brand in the coming months, said Héctor Villarreal, Vice President of Sales, Service and Marketing of General Motors México (GMM).

Introducing the new member of the family of small SUVs in Mexico, the Chevrolet Groove 2022, the GMM executive bet that the unit will become the first choice of customers who want to enter the segment of utility trucks after the exit Chevrolet Beat and Spark.

Villarreal said: “We are going to enter the lower part of the b segment (of SUVs), where we had never had a presence, we are very happy that Groove will be a winner as was Captiva, which in the first semester was placed at number one of the compact SUV, which is one of the most competitive ”.

In an interview with El Economista, GM’s Vice President of Sales commented that the decrease in sales in Mexico is not only the effect of the shortage of chips, but also the brand’s strategy to renew the portfolio of units, and so far Two Captiva and Groove have been introduced and new products are coming during the last leg of 2021.

The American automaker will introduce the new generation GMC Acadia, Terrain, and Chevrolet Travers, as well as the Buick Enclave, in the coming months.

“At GMM we began a complete renewal of the portfolio and we did not stop it, despite the situation that we are going through from a shortage of inventories derived from the shortage of semiconductors, which is a situation that affects the industry and is temporary. The important thing is that we did not stop and we are renewing, entering segments where we had never participated, and now with Groove we are going to complete the range of SuVs and we have not finished it and the product offering offered by Chevrolet and GM is going to be very important. ”.

With the Groove, which is manufactured by the SAIC China plant, “we are moving customers to segments where their preferences are taking them.”

It’s more aspirational, he was questioned. “Let’s say it is more aspirational, but with the prices we announce (from 332,900 to 390,900 pesos) it is an achievable segment and is what we want to do, have options for our customers from vehicles of all ranges, depending on the situation in the who is, ”said Héctor Villarreal.

Recently GM announced the exit of the Chevrolet Beat and the Spark to focus on a different range of vehicles, the corporation made the decision to sell the Talegon plant in India and therefore, “we had to exit the market, but at the same time we took the product strategy that the customer is quite liking ”, such as SUVs.

Will the new units fill the gap of the subcompacts?

Completely, although we also participate with the Aveo in the B segment and the Onix, which is here to stay.
