As of noon on Tuesday, the police had distributed more than 1,300 fines of all kinds to demonstrators, whether for violations of the Highway Code or related to noise.

In addition, 23 people have now been arrested and will face justice for various crimes, including for resisting the police, for breach of probation, for having uttered threats, or, for mischief, the charge brought by the police for the demonstrators who supply truckers with diesel. A total of 85 criminal investigations are ongoing, while the dedicated hate crimes hotline has received over 200 calls.

The police, who demanded on Monday to obtain 1,800 police reinforcements to support the 1,200 officers of their regular force, estimate that only a hundred demonstrators are still on Wellington Street, as well as 418 vehicles.

Moreover, according to the assessment of the Ottawa police, children are in 25% of the trucks participating in the demonstration. “We are in consultation with the children’s aid society to ensure the safety of these children,” assured the police force.
