Mayor Valérie Plante named 17 leading Montrealers to the order, the city’s highest distinction, in a ceremony at the Théâtre St-Jacques in Old Montreal on Sunday, two days before the 380th anniversary of the founding of Montreal.

“The diversity of their backgrounds is a reflection of Montreal,” she said.

Corbowho chaired the Table de concertation du Mount Royal from 2005 to 2020, was named to the highest rank, commander, along with Giroux and Jean-Lucien Rouleau, a cardiologist and former Dean of Medicine at McGill University.

The author of several books on education and politics, Corbo also led consultations on the Montreal Charter of Rights and Responsibilities and co-authored a report on heritage management.

Rouleau authored a number of studies on heart failure and stroke rehabilitation that led to changes in treatment for those conditions, and was an innovator in patient-centered care.

Plant named six people as officers, including architect and urban planner Aurèle Cardinal, whose achievements include the Outremont campus of the Université de Montréal and the Old Port.

Also named as officers were Gérald Larose, the former president of the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN) and a leader of Quebec’s sovereignty movement; and André Ménard, co-founder of the Montreal International Jazz Festival and of Équipe Spectra.
