Dang, the MLA for Edmonton South, was issued a summons for contravening section 107(2) of the Health Information Act and is scheduled to appear in the Edmonton Provincial Court on July 27, 2022, according to a news release from the RCMP.

Dang is accused of “illegally attempting to access private information contained in the Alberta Health Services vaccine portal.”

The RCMP release pointed out such a charge can bring a fine of up to $200,000 upon conviction.

the Alberta RCMP Cybercrime Investigative Team (CIT) initiated a criminal investigation on Nov. 18, 2021 “after receiving information regarding suspicious activity related to unlawful access of private information related to the vaccination records portal.” A search warrant was executed on Dec. 21.

The charge against Dang has not been proven in court. At a press conference on March 22 of this year, Dang claimed he hacked the Alberta vaccine passport system using Premier Jason Kenney’s birthday to highlight flaws in the system.
