Few details after 54-year-old man shot dead at Toronto restaurant

Toronto police remain tight-lipped about the latest shooting homicide that occurred in the early morning hours Sunday at a west-end restaurant.

The fatal shooting happened just before 4 am at The River’s Restaurant and Bar near Eglinton and Oakwood. Police say a large gathering had agreed inside the restaurant, when an altercation happened.

As a result of that altercation, someone discharged a firearm. Michael Barnes, 54, sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased as a result of injuries.

Barnes’ death marked the city’s 28th homicide of the year.

It is not clear why there was a large gathering inside this restaurant at this time of day, or the circumstances that led to the shooting.

Det. Sgt. Henri Marsman said police don’t know yet what led to the altercation, and wouldn’t share any further information on the case as an investigation continues.

“I will not offer any comment on whether Mr. Barnes was known to police,” he said, noting any new developments on this investigation will be communicated through regular channels.

According to provincial records, the business at this location is run by a numbered company with one director.

Police ask that anyone with information about this incident reach out to them.
