Several gatherings were organized – including that of Tennis Canada at her home, in Montreal – to attend the duel between Leylah Annie Fernandez and Briton Emma Raducanu this afternoon in the final of the women’s singles tournament of the United States Tennis Open. United.
The 19-year-old has wowed New York tennis fans for two weeks, en route to her first career Grand Slam final appearance.
Fernandez, who trains in Boynton Beach, Fla. But represents the Maple Leaf on the international stage, successively defeated star players Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber, Elina Svitolina and Aryna Sabalenka to achieve it.
She was ranked 73rd in the world at the start of the tournament, but has shown a poise worthy of the most experienced players on the women’s circuit.

Fernandez will look to become the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam title since conquering Ontarian Bianca Andreescu at the U.S. Open in 2019.
