Ericsson It will buy the American company Vonage, specializing in cloud communications, for 6.2 billion dollars (about 5.5 billion euros), the Swedish telecommunications company reported on Monday.
The offer of Ericsson it received “unanimous approval from Vonage’s board of directors” by the publicly traded group and is part of its “strategy to expand wireless communications and expand its global offering,” the group said in a statement.
The acquisition is the largest in Ericsson’s recent history and expands its business beyond its traditional telecommunications network equipment market, especially in 5G, where it competes with the Chinese leader Huawei and the finnish Nokia.
A $ 21 per share, the offer to shareholders represents a premium of more than 28% over Vonage’s last closing price on the Nasdaq index.
Founded in 2001, Vonage has long offered voice over IP telephony services and in recent years has developed a communications platform (messaging, voice, video) that uses the cloud.
