Employees on leave for Earth Day

Earth Day will be a holiday for the employees of the Quebec company Total Fabrication, which hopes that other entrepreneurs will follow suit so that this symbolic gesture has a real impact.

“Environmental struggles have been somewhat forgotten for two years and people’s priorities have changed with the arrival of the pandemic. We want to bring it up to date,” explains Anthony Poitras, general manager of Total Fabrication, manufacturer of PURE products.

Since its founding in 2005, the bulk biodegradable household products company located in Saint-Alexandre-de-Kamouraska, in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, has tried to set an example in terms of eco-responsibility.

This year, on Earth Day, April 22, all of its employees are asked to stay home. The store and the factory will also be closed, the heating lowered and deliveries suspended.

A challenge

“For a company, one day in the year is a small gesture. But every little gesture counts and, taken end to end, they have a significant impact,” underlines Mr. Poitras.

It is with this in mind that the general manager of Total Fabrication challenges other Quebec entrepreneurs to follow suit and undertake an eco-responsible approach for the occasion.

It is not necessarily a question of granting a day off for Earth Day, he specifies, but of making a concrete gesture to reduce its ecological footprint.

“We can see that the planet has been suffering for years. If we don’t wake up, it’s the following generations that will suffer,” pleads the 37-year-old man who will soon be a dad.

No slowdown

Mr. Poitras is also convinced that this holiday will not have a major impact on the company’s production since everyone “will get their hands dirty to give a little more” in the previous weeks. .

If the project was first proposed by the management of Total Fabrication, it is said that it was particularly well received by all the employees, who will benefit from a long leave.

They will also participate in a short virtual training with zero waste expert Florence-Léa Siry, to improve their way of consuming.

In 2016, Total Fabrication became the first Canadian company to be certified Climate Commitment by the Ecocert organization, which highlights actions to combat greenhouse gases.
