Dignity and professionalization of the nursing staff: priority for the ISSSTE

Today more than ever, health personnel and especially the nursing profession must recognize themselves and improve working conditions, we must address the inequities between professional strata, break paradigms and socialize the importance of advanced practice nursing; For this reason, we have strengthened the training and skills development of nurses, highlighted Ramiro López Elizalde, ISSSTE Health Regulatory Director.

A little over a year ago, a nursing professional was appointed director of a first-level medical unit for the first time in the history of ISSSTE, and like her, today there are 4 directors graduated from this discipline who command units. doctors at the institute. However, the professionalization of the staff is essential for the 31,422 nurses who currently work in this institution to specialize, improve and strengthen technical skills in order to strengthen care processes.

In an interview with Dr. Candelaria Avendaño Ballinas, National Head of Nursing at ISSSTE, she commented that a series of strategies aimed at training and updating this sector were deployed, which translates into the improvement of technical quality and care coverage in the different levels of attention of the Institute, giving itself to the task of developing diplomas and congresses, providing training to 7,886 nursing professionals so far. Likewise, efforts have been made to reengineer tools and standardize processes, which has an impact on patient care and safety.

Finally, Dr. Avendaño highlighted that the nursing staff has played a key role in the care and services provided in the emergency plan for Covid-19 as well as in the national vaccination plan. Her work has been highlighted beyond the walls of a hospital, so it seeks to recognize these skills by expanding the opportunities to direct more medical units.
