Demonstrations: threats to the mayor of Quebec

While some applauded the mayor of Quebec for his handling of the protests, other more aggressive individuals also sent him threats which he passed on to the police.

Like most politicians, the mayor of Quebec has received several hate messages since the beginning of his mandate.

A few messages have reached him since the beginning of the month in connection with what he has been able to say about the demonstrations in the capital.

After the first demonstration in Quebec, the municipal administration notably tried to tighten the rules surrounding gatherings.

The mayor of Quebec has warned that his patience with truck convoy protesters “will have limits” and that those who do not follow the rules should expect to be kicked out.

To the police

The fact of denouncing behavior deemed unacceptable would not have pleased some of them who replied to the mayor. However, the exact content of the remarks cannot be revealed.

The mayor’s entourage claims that all threatening messages are forwarded to the police.

“Any messages we receive that are considered violent, hateful or incite hatred are forwarded to the authorities.

So far, only about ten messages have been forwarded to the police for analysis. Our team carefully scrutinizes the mayor’s social networks and automatically reports what seems to be problematic, ”explains Thomas Gaudreault, press officer for Mayor Marchand.

Discontent, however, has intensified in recent weeks with the protests.

“The mayor exposed himself to virulent criticism on his management of the demonstrations, but also concerning his personal life. Nothing was tolerated. As soon as there was any doubt, we submitted it for analysis,” adds Mr. Gaudreault.

The Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP) will have to assess at least one file in order to decide whether charges will be filed.

Former mayor Régis Labeaume has also filed a complaint with the police a few times in recent years.

Arrests

Several Quebecers, overwhelmed by health measures, also threatened the Premier of Quebec. Authorities are closely monitoring social media and there are more arrests.

An accused, Philippe Charbonneau, was recently rebuffed by Judge Louise Provost at the Montreal courthouse.

“His messages were degrading, indefensible and hateful, not to mention the death threats which can always have a chain effect,” said Judge Provost.

Last November, a Terrebonne conspirator was also found guilty of threatening death to Prime Ministers François Legault and Justin Trudeau as well as Dr. Horacio Arruda in the midst of the pandemic. Patrick Dussault received a suspended sentence at the Saint-Jérôme courthouse.
