Debit card, the favorite to make purchases in electronic commerce: Condusef

More and more Mexicans are making purchases through electronic commerce, and for this they mainly use the debit card, although for larger amounts, they opt for the credit card.

In electronic commercethere were 840 million transactions, which already represented 20.3% of the total, with a growth of 44% compared to 2020. As for the amount, this totaled 500.171 million pesos, 42% more than the previous year.

The report of Condusef specifies that in 2021, operations with credit card in electronic commerce they added 253 million, an annual increase of 44%; while the total amount was 256,115 million pesos, an increase of 41 percent.

Meanwhile, operations with Debit in electronic commerce they reached 588 million, a growth of 45% compared to 2020; while the amount totaled 244,057 million pesos, an increase of 43% in the period.

“The preference for using the debit card remains, since of the 840 million operations, this represented 69.9% (…) for each credit card operation, 2.3 are made with debit. However, when considering the expense, there is a very similar proportion between the two, since credit purchases are usually larger in amount,” the agency points out.

He adds that in relation to the average expense in each purchase of electronic commercethe circumstances are reversed, since the amount of those made with a credit card represents 2.4 times that of those made with a debit.

“For the credit card, the average expense was 1,102 pesos and for the debit card it was 450 pesos, which still indicates that for small purchases, use is preferably with own resources, and for larger amounts, with credit. granted by financial entities”, he emphasizes.

According to the report of the Condusefthe entity with the highest representation in the electronic commerceremains BBVA with 45.53% (34.34% debit and 11.19% credit); followed by Citibanamex with 20.70% (12.93% debit and 7.77% credit).

“That is, just over 6 out of 10 purchases are made with cards from two financial institutions,” he says.

Most operations are authorized

The Condusef mentions that during 2021, cardholders requested authorization for around 1,324 million purchases in electronic commerce using both means of payment, and that 63% ended in an authorized movement by the card-issuing institution, that is, 840 million transactions, of which only 0.47% resulted in a chargeback or claim by the holder, by not recognizing the operation or its amount.
