Crisis at the CIDE?

There are 48 hours left for the external auscultation of the candidates for the general direction of the CIDE and in the making, a rebellion against the interim, who intends to stay in office and is against the academics.

The general director of Conacyt, Maria Elena Alvarez-Buylla, will have to interview the applicants, José Antonio Romero Tellaeche and the former PRD deputy Vidal Llerenas. But before appointing the new head of the institution, he will have to resolve the internal dispute.

The election of the replacement for Sergio López Ayllón is ongoing. The first stage concluded last Thursday the 11th, when the two registered candidates presented their project in an “internal monitoring” that was blended. Romero Tellaeche —who entered the internship last February— maintained his hostile attitude towards the faculty and researchers, and in his appearance denounced the “academic prostitution” prevailing in that university.

The following day, in his capacity as interim director, Romero Tellaeche sent an electronic communication to the professors and researchers to notify about the suspension of the sessions that would be held by the academic advisory committees (CADIs), bodies that evaluate and define the permanence of the academic plant, scheduled for November 16 and 17.

“The CIDE is in the process of appointing its general director and as such, whoever is appointed to the position is the person indicated to relieve the points to be discussed in the Commission,” argued the interim director. “In the same way, the academic secretariat can change with the new administration,” he added.

In preparation for these meetings, Celine FA González Schont, director of academic evaluation, consulted the head of the Legal Affairs Unit about the possible causes for the extension or suspension of these meetings. The general director – he reiterated the answer, generated on November 9 – is empowered to propose that the CADI sessions be postponed, but that it should have the validation of the 22 members – among whom are the directors of the academic divisions and the general secretary – of those instances, which by statute are obliged to meet at least once every semester.

González Schont, through official letter DEA / 00011/21, summoned the manager to confirm his attendance at the sessions and warned him about the risk of suspending them, since this unilateral decision could be considered a violation of the academic and labor rights of CIDE staff . Given the risk of non-compliance with internal regulations, González Schont and Catherine Andrews, academic secretary, installed the CADIs yesterday at 8:00 am. An hour later, Romero Tellaeche informed them of his removal with immediate effect and asked the judges “not to be part of this act of rebellion. Any decision made in these meetings will be invalid, “he warned.

To the directors of the academic divisions, he said: “the necessary conditions do not exist to carry out the evaluations, which is why I ask for your valuable support in notifying the external professors that they had been summoned.”

In the evening, Andrew released a detailed account of his confrontation with Romero Tellaeche. “It is clear that I have not incurred in ‘acts of rebellion’, but that I have been dismissed for insisting on compliance with the rules and statutes that regulate the tasks and obligations of the academic secretariat,” he concluded.
