Active COVID-19 cases spiked again in the Peterborough area on Wednesday as Peterborough Public Health reported a new one-day record of 60 new cases, topping Tuesday’s record of 40.

There have been at least four confirmed cases of the Omicron COVID-19 variant, with concerns about possible exposure at the American Eagle store in the Lansdowne Place mall, as reported on December 16.

The health unit publishes its weekly vaccination rate data on Wednesdays. This week’s data compared to December 15:

All eligible residents (ages 5 and up):

  • First dose: 84.5 percent (versus 83.7 percent)
  • First and second doses: 79.6% (vs 79.3%)
  • Third dose: 20.8 percent (versus 11.3 percent)

Young (5 to 11 years old):

  • First dose: 40.0 percent (versus 29.5 percent)
  • Second dose: 0.3% (data from the first time)

Youth (12 to 17 years old):

  • First dose: 81.2% (vs 80.9%)
  • First and second doses: 77.6% (vs 77.2%)
  • Third dose: 0.3 percent (vs 0.2 percent)

Adults (over 18 years old):

  • First dose: 88.4 percent (vs. 88.2 percent)
  • First and second doses: 86.2% (vs 85.9%)
  • Third dose: 23.9 percent (versus 13 percent)

Older adults (over 70 years old):

  • First dose: 100 percent (no change)
  • First and second doses: 100 percent (no change)
  • Third dose: 55.3 percent (versus 36.8 percent)

Other vaccination data:

  • 270,718 doses of vaccine have been administered locally, an additional 16,950 doses since the December 15 update.
  • 119,702 residents have received a first dose (+1,261 since December 15)
  • 112,659 323 residents have received their second dose (+336 since December 15).
  • 29,473 residents have received their third dose (+13,492 since December 15).

Third dose / booster vaccines are now available to residents 18 years of age and older, and first stockpiles of vaccines are available to children ages 5 to 11. All appointments must be booked on Ontario Online Portal or by calling the provincial vaccine reservation call center at 1-833-943-3900. The health unit updates its list of clinics on their website.

Pop-up testing clinic

A new pop-up testing clinic will be held at St. Peter Catholic High School at 730 Medical Dr., Peterborough, Wednesday through Friday this week. Appointments are available only through this link: https://bit.ly/3spXWWM.

The hospital says that testing services continue to be offered through its COVID-19 Assessment Center, yet the demand is extremely high. All medical tests and evaluations for COVID-19 in Peterborough are now consolidated in the Peterborough Regional Health Center assessment center at 1 Dr.

Various Peterborough and area pharmacies offer vaccinations to eligible recipients. An appointment is required and can be done by calling the respective pharmacies or visiting the Ontario government website.

Rapid antigen tests

Rapid antigen tests for the province will be available for distribution at the following locations:

  • Lansdowne Place Mall (656 Lansdowne St. W.), at 7 a.m. Thursday.
  • Peterborough Memorial Center (151 Lansdowne St. W.) from 5 pm to 9 pm on Monday, December 27.
  • Peterborough Farmers’ Market, Morrow Building (151 Lansdowne St. W.) from 7 am to 1 pm on Saturday, January 8.
  • Peterborough Public Library (345 Aylmer St. N.) from 10 am to 3 pm on Wednesday, January 5 and Thursday, January 6.

On Wednesday, the health unit reported two new outbreaks:

  • Crestwood Secondary School and at Extendicare Lakefield. Details were not immediately available.

There have been 369 cases associated with 66 outbreaks since the pandemic was declared, 24 cases in the past 30 days.

  • Deceased: 28 since the pandemic was declared with four reported this month, the most recent on Monday.
  • Cumulative confirmed cases: 2,320 since the pandemic was declared in March 2020
  • Variants of cases of concern: 1,348 – 34 more cases since Tuesday’s update. There are four variant cases of Omicron, the first two reported on December 14. The first variant case in the region was reported on February 23; the first confirmed case of the Delta variant was reported on June 19.
  • Resolved cases: 2,084: eight more cases since Tuesday. Resolved cases represent approximately 91.8% of all cases.

  • Hospitalizations: 100 cases have required hospitalization since the pandemic began, a new case since Tuesday. Peterborough Regional Health Center on Tuesday reported five active COVID-19 admissions. Hospitalized cases represent approximately 4.3% of all cases; 22 of the cases required the intensive care unit, unchanged from Monday. Admissions to the ICU account for 0.9 percent of all cases in the health unit since the start of the pandemic.
  • Exposure to COVID-19: 70% of all cases (1,625) in the jurisdiction of the health unit are due to contact with another existing case, 19.8% (459 cases) are related to community spread, 3.4% (79 cases ) are related to travel and 6.8% (157 cases) have their source yet to be determined.
  • Evidence: More than 67,750 people have been tested for COVID-19, 250 more since Tuesday’s update. About one in three residents has been tested for COVID-19.
  • Application: From October 1, charges have been filed against a total of four businesses under the Ontario Reopening Act.
